Chapter 21

"Max doesn't know that we're the ones who own the cupcake shop, but that doesn't give him the right to think that he can just come in and take over somebody's business."

The initial shock was wearing off and Teague was starting to feel a searing anger settle in. The pain in Layla's eyes only pushed it further and he felt his hands starting to tremble with the aggression that he was trying to contain.

"You saw how much money he has to throw around. He rented an entire theme park to get into your pants. He can, and does, do anything that he wants."

The words struck Teague and he felt heat creep across his cheeks. He set his jaw and looked down at the floor between his feet.

"He wasn't trying to get into my pants," he said, struggling to keep the emotion out of his voice.

Layla swung her head over to look at him and scoffed.

"Are you serious?" she asked. "Who was the first one that he went for?"

Teague hadn't really been ready to talk about what happened at the theme park. He was fighting his feelings, and this situation was only making the confusion roiling through him that much harder to process.

"I don't care how much money he has, Layla. Being richer than God doesn't actually make him God. Just because he doesn't know that it's us he's screwing over doesn't make the situation any better. It actually makes it worse because now we know how he has all that money. How many people do you think he's trampled on his way to limos and endless cotton candy?"

"He comes from a wealthy family," Layla said.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Teague said, letting her hand drop out of his and standing up. "You are seriously going to use the poor tormented heir defense here?" He gave a short, mirthless laugh.

"I'm not defending him, Teague," Layla said. Her face was dry now, but she looked strained. "I didn't say that what he's doing is right."

"It's not right," Teague shouted. "It is not right by any stretch of the imagination, and I’m not going to let him get away with it."

He started to the door.

"What are you going to do?" she asked.

"I'm going to make sure that he knows exactly who he's messing with and make sure that he knows that he's not going to get away with it. He might be used to the world giving him whatever he wants, but he's not going to walk over me to get it. He's exactly what I've been saying he was since you fell all over yourself for him. I'm not going to forget it again."

Teague slammed the backdoor to the kitchen behind him so hard he could feel the vibrations of the metal shuddering through him. He stalked down the alley back toward his car, pulling his phone out of his pocket as he went.

"Hey," Max said when the ringing on the other end of the line stopped.

The sultry tone in his voice indicated that Max was happy he had called, but Teague ignored it.
